Hello Birding Friends!
Binoculars are not necessary to enjoy birding. There is other equipment you may prefer, such as monoculars or cameras, and it is entirely possible to enjoy birds with the bare eye or by ear. That said, many people who are able to use them find binoculars to enhance their birding experience.
Many local libraries have birding backpacks you can borrow. I intend to check out the one from Farmington Community Library and bring it to our next walk. Check your local branch for availability.
If you are; however, interested in getting a pair of your own, there are entry-level options that are quite good. The binoculars section of our Getting Started page has some basic info about optics and links to reliable sources for how to pick binoculars, as well as a few recommendations.
The best way to figure out what you like is to try some different kinds out. I’m happy to let you give mine a whirl if you join us for an outing, and I suspect others may as well!
And if anyone out there has some decent binoculars that they aren’t using, we’d be delighted if you would donate them to the cause so we can increase the number of loaner pairs we have available.
